Much of the criticism of Sterling comes from her effort to obscure a 1932 mural by David Alfaro Siqueiros, titled “América Tropical,” that depicted a country “oppressed and destroyed by imperialism.”

The present-day mural wars arguably began in 1932, over “América Tropical,” on Olvera Street, a work commissioned for L.A.’s Olympic year and painted by the renowned Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros.

For the system to meet its graduation goals, Siqueiros said it must focus on improving the success for Black, Latino and Indigenous students by offering “targeted, informed and differentiated” strategies for supporting them.

Siqueiros said Kern County is a leader in awarding associate’s degrees for transfer, which guarantees students admission to Cal State University.

Oakley and Siqueiros are pushing UC to admit all community college students who earn the Associate Degree for Transfer as Cal State does.
