The SSA had a reputation for long processing times, overburdened customer support and inefficiency, but appeared to be turning around under the leadership of Administrator Martin O’Malley.

“The result is a systematic dismantling of SSA’s core functions, leaving millions of beneficiaries without the essential benefits they are legally entitled to,” the lawsuit adds.

Each of those concerns, Flick writes, was “invalid” and “based on an inaccurate understanding of SSA’s data and programs.”

Existing SSA guidance noted that applying “when you provide information for your baby’s birth certificate in the hospital” was the “easiest way to get a Social Security number.”
