By 2010, it was beginning to shut down, leaving behind the remnants of its industrial processes, including chemicals known as TCE and PCE.

Massachusetts Sen. Edward Markey, who has led the effort to ban TCE, welcomed the move.

Several years ago, the Borlands and a group o neighbors learned their water was polluted with trichloroethylene, or TCE, a solvent that was traced to a nearby business.

Those exposed there to water heavily contaminated with TCE had a 70% higher risk of developing Parkinson’s disease decades later compared with similar veterans who trained elsewhere.

According to the EPA, water is contaminated if it contains more than 5 parts per billion of TCE.
