Opening with an ebullient piano riff and the indelible lyrics “The best things in life are free/But you can give them to the birds and bees,” the 1960 release of “Money” was a breakthrough moment for Berry Gordy Jr.’s nascent recording company, which was headquartered in a Detroit house emblazoned with the sign “Hitsville U.S.A.”
The recording engineer, Robert Bateman, was tantalized by what he was hearing, alerted Mr. Gordy, and soon the song, with its famous opening — “The best things in life are free, but you can give them to the birds and bees” — was born.
With its opening refrain, "The best things in life are free/But you can give them to the birds and bees", Money was an instant hit, shooting to number two on the US R&B chart and number 23 on the Hot 100.
