“Nine of them were sent to the ICU, and two of them, with almost 100 percent of their bodies burned, were sent to Cali to a burn unit,” he said, referring to the larger city roughly 60 miles southwest of �ճܱ���á.

The prison is a medium-security facility in the city of �ճܱ���á, an industrial and commercial center in Colombia’s Cauca Valley.

“������ happened in �ճܱ���á, like the massacre in La Modelo, forces a complete rethinking of prison policy,” Petro wrote.

The national prison authority said the fire in �ճܱ���á, in Valle del Cauca, was started by prisoners in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The Office of the Inspector General, the country's main public authority watchdog, said it was sending a special commission to �ճܱ���á.
