Unalaska Island

You can continue your journey along the Aleutians to the remote port of Dutch Harbor on Unalaska island – perhaps the most remote place you can ever get to by public transport in North America.

No ash was expected to fall on nearby Unalaska Island, home to one of the nation’s largest fishing ports, Dutch Harbor.

The observatory says prevailing winds pushed the cloud southeast toward the southwest end of Unalaska Island.

The agency doesn't want a repeat of the Selendang Ayu, a 738-foot freighter that lost power, ran aground and broke in two on Dec. 8, 2004, on the north side of Unalaska Island in the Aleutians.

Smit had worked on the Selendang Ayu, a ship that broke in half and spilled fuel and soybeans after grounding in bad weather off Unalaska Island in December 2004.
