The characters in Joe Masteroff’s book, based on the play “I Am a Camera” by John van Druten that was itself based on stories by Christopher Isherwood, aren’t meant to be Broadway Olympians.

It has been dismantled before — most recently in 2017 for a renovation, Mr. van Druten said.

The dismantling process takes about a day, as does putting it back together, according to Peter van Druten, a spokesman for the city of Rotterdam.

That political development looms throughout the musical, which is based on John Van Druten’s play “I Am a Camera” and stories by Christopher Isherwood.
