Dr Elise Vernet is an adaptive optics specialist at ESO and has been overseeing development of the five giant mirrors that will gather and channel light to the telescope’s measuring equipment.

"Farmers are having to do much more... with less support," Luc Vernet of Brussels-based think tank Farm Europe told the BBC.

But Mr Vernet batted off these concerns: "Farmers are not extremists. In fact, farmers in Europe are the first Europeans, because they're the ones who know best how important Europe is for them."

The detective on his case, Marie-François Goron, a man with a truly fabulous mustache, was convinced that Vernet was an alias.

He thought Vernet was actually a criminal named Simon, who’d killed someone a decade before.
