Tourism may still be easier in the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia at the river’s mouth, but it is growing in the valley itself and is worth the trek.

Pinto grew up in a small, blue-tiled house on a hill in Vila Nova de Gaia, which faces Porto, Portugal’s second city, across the River Douro.

When Pinto was back in Vila Nova de Gaia, he had travelled to a few away matches with the team’s hard-core supporters’ club, the Super Dragons.

In the fall, Pinto returned to Vila Nova de Gaia.
