But the only significant gain of ground had been the capture by the Canadians of the dominating Vimy Ridge near Arras.

Sgt Musgrave was awarded the Military Medal for his bravery in April 1917 when he led his platoon under heavy fire at the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Slowly, the Vimy began to rise — only a few yards at first, but it was off the ground.

After a few anxious moments, the Vimy reappeared, ascending unhurriedly into the sky.
