The morning after his drive to the Arab neighborhood, Abudayyeh parked near Union Park and walked toward the United Center in west Chicago.

Durkin was raised in the west Chicago suburbs in the ’60s and grew up going to exactly the kind of restaurant the St. Clair brings back to life, as had the friends he was dining with.

Garcia, who speaks English, is part of a primarily Spanish-speaking community in West Chicago, and she knows many parents can’t advocate for their kids in a second language.
