This month, whales have died in Long Beach and Huntington Beach from the toxin and dozens of pelicans have become ill, with their offspring on the brink of starvation.

In the coming weeks, rescuers are waiting to see if a group of humpback whales feeding in an algae bloom hotspot near the Channel Islands will become sick and come to shore.

The French government has been urged to reconsider rehoming two stranded killer whales in Canada.

Managers at Marineland said sanctuaries are a hypothetical that "will take years" to be built and with "no guarantees" the whales will be properly looked after.

On the coasts, conservation experts say there has been a crop of sightings of whales and dolphins close to British shores – and though it's difficult to pin down a reason, warming seas and climate change are likely to be a factor.
