On April 3, 1934, in an article about a dying 4-year-old girl, a reporter described the disease as “an overabundance of white corpuscles in the blood,” adding that “its cure is infrequent.”

In the capillaries a considerable number of white corpuscles are found in contact with the wall, but numbers of red corpuscles are associated with them.

At other times it is not sufficient, particularly if the disease has advanced and the number of bacteria is too great for the enfeebled white corpuscles to deal with.
