These elderly parents depend on phone calls from their children for social contact, says a report from the WRVS.

The report from the WRVS, formerly the Women's Royal Voluntary Service, describes how "fragmented" family life in the UK can leave older people stranded with little contact from their own children.

Volunteering charity WRVS, which runs Jimmy's, said it had agreed with the hospital to use Cafe@WRVS.

Olive Brogan who receives care from the WRVS, said without visits from her carer Carol, she would be entirely alone.

She said members of the alliance, which include WRVS, MS society and Age Cymru, had found that different councils were offering different services.
