Under Tweed, the team’s second head coach in three seasons, Angel City rallied to reach the playoffs in 2023 but slumped to a franchise-worst 7-13-6 last season, finishing 12th in the 14-team NWSL.

Businesswoman Michele Kang, for example, has poured tens of millions into women’s soccer as majority owner of the NWSL’s Washington Spirit, French club Olympique Lyonnais and the London City Lionesses of England’s second-tier women’s championship.

"This behaviour is unacceptable and has no place in our league or in our stadiums," the NWSL, Orlando Pride and Gotham FC all said in a statement on Monday.

New Angel City sporting director Mark Parsons says the team’s mix of teens and seasoned veterans is key to its success in NWSL.

There is widespread agreement in Angel City’s front office that this year, the club’s fourth in the NWSL, is going to be a significant upgrade from its first three.
